Stormwater Management

What is Stormwater Pollution?

Stormwater pollution happens when rain or melting snow flows over streets, sidewalks, and yards, picking up litter, oils, chemicals, and other pollutants. This runoff often travels through storm sewers directly into our rivers, lakes, and streams—without being treated—making the water unsafe for recreation, wildlife, and even drinking.

To help protect water quality, the Village of  Campton Hills manages stormwater under the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) General National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).   The village’s plan and goals for stormwater management are outlined in the Notice of Intent.

How You Can Help Reduce Stormwater Pollution

You can make a difference by adopting a few simple habits to prevent stormwater pollution:

  • Dispose of Chemicals Properly: Never dump antifreeze, motor oil, or paints down the drain.
  • Use Fertilizers & Pesticides Sparingly: Apply these products carefully to reduce runoff.
  • Clean Up Spills Quickly: Prevent fuel, oil, or grease spills from entering storm drains.
  • Pick Up Pet Waste:  Dispose of pet waste properly to avoid water contamination.
  • Control Sediment: If working on construction projects, manage sediment runoff.
  • Properly Dispose of Trash: Always dispose of trash, including cigarette butts, properly.

By recycling chemicals, reducing vehicle leaks, and following guidelines for pool chemicals, we can all help protect local waterways and improve water quality.
